No, I am not George Whitefield. Nor am I Jonathan Edwards. However, I am a minister of the Gospel and have been inspired by such men. I represent the ministers of the faith who, although may be forgotten by history, laid the foundation of the historic black church during the 18th century. Men such as Lemuel Haynes, John Marrant, and Jacobus Capitein; men who were born into adversity, yet by God’s sovereign grace preached the Gospel to all people during their time. By portraying these and other black ministers, I illustrate that the theological beginnings of the historic black church are rooted in the Doctrines of Grace, and that the Gospel transcends time, culture, and people. I am the Black Puritan, a slave to the Gospel of freedom.
